Box Office: Fighting Robots Outperform Dancing Teenagers

by Brian Kesler

Although boasting pretty good reviews, 'Footloose,' the remake of the 1984 Kevin Bacon movie, took second place in its opening week, with $16.1M. Adjusted for inflation, the original 'Footloose' earned $20M at the same point. Interestingly, the original 'Footloose' has a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the new film at 72%. Of course, the former has only 35 reviews posted, and the latter 136. The audience was 75% female, and 27% under the age of 18.

'Real Steel' came in first for the second week in a row, with $16.3M. Including its foreign box office, the film has passed the $100M mark in only two weeks. At 61% on the Tomatometer, the film had fairly positive reviews and, based on the audience-meter of 83%, good word-of-mouth.

'The Thing' only managed to frighten studio executives with a poorly performing box office. Another remake of a 1980s film, 'The Thing' earned a measly $8.7M, coinciding with its awful 34% Tomatometer, and a weak 'B-' from CinemaScore.

'Moneyball' has passed its $50M budget, and '50/50' continues to have success, it's total at $24.3M from an $8M budget. 'Ides of March' held well, dipping just 28% for a total of $22.2M.

20th Century Fox is on their third flop in a row with 'The Big Year.' The unfortunate Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson propelled film premiered in 9th place with only $3.3M. This follows 'Glee: The 3-D Concert Movie' and 'What's Your Number' for big disappointments. With the star power of the film, its unlikely it will ever regain its budget, and a 41% Tomatometer doesn't help the situation either.

All in all, business was off 33% from last year, most likely proving that the higher ticket prices get, the lower attendance will be.
