Box Office: 'Real Steel' Knocks Out Competition

by Brian Kesler

Predictably, 'Reel Steel' topped the box office charts over the weekend, albeit moderately. The film earned an estimated $27.3M, which officially makes it the best debut for a boxing movie ever. However, if you were to adjust for inflation, all the 'Rocky' movies and 'Raging Bull' would be miles ahead. If we look at 'Reel Steel' as a science fiction movie featuring robots, however, its debut isn't much to shout about. Not surprisingly, the film's audience was 70% under the age of 35.

Director/Actor George Clooney's film, 'The Ides of March' did moderately well with $10.4M. That's slightly ahead of Clooney's 'Michael Clayton,' but slightly behind star Ryan Gosling's 'Drive.' For both the film's stars, the film had a foreseeable debut. Sony Pictures, who distributed the film, also passed the $1 Billion mark over the weekend.

Among last weekend's weak entries, '50/50' had the best holdover, making $5.5M. 'Courageous' had the weakest holdover, tumbling 50% from last week. 'Dream House' made only $4.5M for a total of $14.5M and 'What's Your Number?' continued to flop with $3.05M, bringing its total to a sad $10.3M.

'Moneyball' and 'Dolphin Tale' claimed the third and fourth spots on the list, both totaling about $49M.

The horror sequel 'The Human Centipede Two: Full Sequence' made a considerable $54,000 in only 18 theaters. That's a per-screen average of $3000. The first film had a rough theatrical run, but became a hit on DVD among horror fanatics, which could be the reason for the sequel's strong debut.
